Twisted Spoke

My twisted take on the world of pro bike racing.

Hushovd vs. Cavendish, the 12 round Tour De France boxing match.

Thor, the God of Thunder, versus Boy Racer. Who do you think wins that boxing match?

Personally, I’m putting my money on Thor. After nearly pushing Hushovd into the barriers in the stage 14 sprint, Thor’s ready to punch out the Manx Missile. As they say in the old Rock “Em Sock “Em Robots commercial, Thor is gonna “knock his block off.”

The tale of the tape: In one corner  we have Hushovd at 6 feet and 180 pounds. The Norwegian Brawler, the slugger from Grimstad, packs a mean punch. He wears the green jersey and nobody is taking it from him.

In the other corner, the Manx Man, at 5’9″ and 150 pounds. A quick counter-puncher to be certain, but Cavendish gives up 3 inches and fifty pounds to Hushovd. And unfortunately for Mark, there are not eight other guys from Columbia to help when Hushovd breaks his jaw.

Our fight prognostication: Thor is going to beat the crap out of Cavendish. And if the Columbia rider tries to crawl out of the ring, we suspect Tyler Farrar and a few other sprinters will throw him back in. There are plenty of riders in the peloton who are fed up with Cavendish’s antics.

In the under-card, look for “Frothin’ Bob Stapleton, the owner of team Columbia to go against skinny Jonathan Vaughters, the manager of team Garmin. Vaughters is a decided under-dog but has really cool side-burns and is younger the Big Bad Bob. No word on the rumored Armstrong-Contador battle, which is scheduled for tomorrow on the Verbier climb.
